The Practice

ICU - We have a separate building for ICU so that contagious pets are not exposed to other hospitalized, surgical, or boarding animals. We also have a camera monitoring system and speaker system so that your hospitalized pet is never left alone.

Additionally, we have a separate feline room that is double insulated and on its own air system. We did this to keep the room as quiet as possible therefore avoiding the stress of a possible barking dog.

Walking and Run -  area is double fenced to ensure your pets safety.

Surgery Suite - is stocked with the latest in anesthesia monitoring equipment, heated table to maintain body temperature, cautery unit, pulse oximetry unit, and other state of the art equipment. We use only high quality surgical materials.

Full In House Laboratory - Our main Laboratory Technician, Renee, is well trained in the operation of our extensive in house laboratory equipment. This aids in helping to quickly assist in the diagnosis of your pet’s medical problems. Quality control tests to maintain the accuracy of all in-house testing and equipment are performed daily. We have top of the line equipment.

Our in house laboratory includes a Lasercyte for Complete Blood Counts, VetTest Analyzer for individual or panel blood profiles (all organ system testing), Electrolye Reader, and Snap Reader for Thyroid panels as well as a Urinalysis Machine.  Many abnormal results are confirmed by a manual test procedure as needed.

We have an additional Higher Powered Cytology Microscope for the reading of cytology samples. This aids in reading of samples of growths and tumors. Confirmation of abnormal readings are sent to a Pathologist.

We also rely on Texas A & M University’s Laboratory (Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and Dermatology Dept.)  for some of our laboratory needs. All samples are shipped overnight delivery ensure the fastest turn around time for all tests no matter their level of priority.

Radiology -    In the event that your pet requires radiographs, we offer in house diagnostic radiology with an automatic processor.  Our technicians are will trained in all aspects of radiology. We have state of the art radiology machine and an automatic film processing.   Dr. Mercer and our Technicians will take care to ensure your pets comfort during these procedures.

Dentistry -    Your pet’s health and well being is directly related to their oral health. Oral disease can lead to systemic illness of your pet’s heart, liver, lungs and kidneys. We recommend routine dental cleanings, home dental care and regular dental examinations. This will be done at the comprehensive annual exam. However, if you notice odor, difficulty in chewing or licking lips, or a decreased appetite, please call for an appointment for a dental exam. A dental cleaning includes complete prophylactic cleaning with an ultrasonic scaler, a polishing, and a fluoride treatment. Recommendations to help maintain your pets oral health will be made at this time.

Surgery

We provide an aseptic, single- use room for all surgeries.

Dr. Mercer performs major and minor surgeries every week. She offers surgical services in areas such as emergency surgery of all kinds,  soft tissue,  some ophthalmic surgeries and orthopedics. Dr. Mercer does not perform or recommend ear cropping.

Dr. Mercer highly recommends and on occasion will require pre-surgical blood testing.  This can be done the day of surgery.  Pre Anesthetic blood testing for your pet is much the same as hospitals and Physicians require for people before they undergo a procedure. These tests ensure organs that process the anesthesia in the body are working properly.  Testing also detects the presence of dehydration, anemia, underlying infection, diabetes and kidney or liver disease, and low blood clotting factors. These conditions may not be detected without blood testing. Additionally, these tests can / will be used in the future to determine your pets baseline values. If your pet is 7 years or older we recommend and can perform the Senior Blood Panel if you wish before surgery. However, Dr. Mercer will likely have recently done this before she scheduled your surgery.
